Where are “U” in PTA?

It’s more than just a slogan. Studies show that children whose parents are involved in their education do better at school. What better way to be involved, setting an example of community and school involvement for our children, than to join PTA?

There are a myriad of ways to help. Some ways involve spending time at the school working directly with your children and their classmates. There are also a multitude of ways to help that don’t involve classroom time or that are more suited to parents who work during the day.

Charleston Joint PTA has provided services and sponsored events that you know and depend on year after year. Events such as Scholastic book fairs, the annual Mark Twain HollyDay Breakfast, Jefferson Chili Supper, and Carl Sandburg Ice Cream Social to name a few.

We provide direct assistance to classroom teachers in the form of classroom representatives, building representatives, and classroom party volunteers. Now, more than ever, it is even more important to continue this help.

Membership Benefits

As a member of the Charleston Joint PTA you receive discounts on family events and are eligible to vote at all general membership meetings (make your voice heard!)

Being a member of our PTA lets you meet new people while helping out in your child's school and work with the staff who guide your child's learning.

You can volunteer whenever you can, at your own comfort level (no pressure!)

Your membership dollars also make it possible for the PTA to bring huge benefits to your children all year long.

As a PTA member, you are entitled to discounts/offers from National PTA partners such as Hertz, LifeLock, Quicken Loans, MetLife and ThinkFun.  To access these discounts, please visit the Member Benefits page at the National PTA website.

Frequently Asked Question about joining PTA

Q: Why join PTA?

There are many reasons to join PTA- here a few of our favorites:

To encourage your child!  Research has shown that the more involved parents are in a child's education, the better the child performs in school.

To help all children!  PTA's primary mission is to advocate for ALL children. Why is this important to you? By investing time in the present, we help ensure that our children will become positive contributors to our society in the future.

It’s fun! You'll meet other parents, share parenting tips, and develop leadership skills.

Q: How much does membership cost?

Membership to join Charleston Joint PTA is only $10 a year for an individual or $15 a year for a family. Your membership automatically makes you a member of both State and National PTA!

Q: How long is my membership valid?

Your membership is valid July 1 of the current school year until June 30 of the current school year.  You will need to renew your membership each year.

Q: Where does the money go?

$2.25 goes to the State (Illinois PTA) and $2.25 goes to National PTA. This money helps offset materials, support and training provided by the State and National PTA provided at no cost to members. The remaining $1.50 stays right here with the Charleston Joint PTA.

Q: What does the Charleston Joint PTA do with the $1.50 collected from each membership?

Money collected from memberships, along with other funds allow the Charleston Joint PTA to fund many programs and activities throughout the year such as assemblies, family events, field trips, Scholastic News magazine, and many more.

Q: What are the benefits of membership?

Please see Member Benefits above.

Q: I work, can I still be involved?

Absolutely!  There are a variety of ways to help. Some examples of activities are: volunteering at a book fair, cutting out Campbell’s Labels, reading to a class, making copies for a teacher, helping at a PTA event, donating money towards a school project, submitting a story for the newsletter or setting up for an event, just to name a few!

Q: Do I have to come to meetings to be a member?

Certainly not. While it is important for the sake of progress to have a quorum at meetings, we realize that not all members will be able to make all meetings. There are still plenty of ways to be involved even if you cannot attend meetings. Plus, with access to meeting minutes, newsletters and events calendar you won't miss a beat!

Q: If I don't have a child in school, can I still be a member?

Yes, a PTA is open to all people with or without a child in that school.  We welcome all adults who care for child education, safety and overall well-being
